The SA 8000 standard is an international certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain and implement socially responsible practices in the workplace. Obtaining an accredited SA 8000 certificate is proof of compliance with the SA8000 standard by an organization.
SA 8000 concerns all companies regardless of activity that aim at continuously improving labour conditions and communicate this to all relevant stakeholders and interested parties, by addressing labour issues also to sub-contractors.
SA 8000 standard for socially acceptable working conditions sets specific standards. In addition to the requirements for workers' rights, the SA 8000 is designed to include international agreements, such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) Treaty, the International Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These tools refer to the general application requirements of the SA 8000 standard.
